With the UCI Road World Championships taking place in Yorkshire over the last week, we got in on the action by joining 40 other youth clubs from across the UK to put on a grass roots cycling event, as part of a nationwide campaign, the ‘HSBC UK Go-Ride Racing Weekender’.

Working in partnership with the Zetland Park Regeneration Project, we put on a multi-station event, ‘FJBC Mini Worlds’. The event was open to riders on balance bikes, and also included categories for Under 8s, Under 10s and Under 12s. The riders had to compete over 4-5 stations, focusing on skills, pacing themselves, an elimination race, the biggest glide and a Cyclocross race.

While the weather didn’t make it easy, close to 90 riders braved the elements to test their skills and endurance over three hours at Zetland Park on Sunday 22nd September. This made our event the biggest in the UK – a huge achievement for an event which had only been in the planning for a number of weeks.

We raised £300 from the event, and donated this to the Friends of Zetland Park group, who have been focusing, as part of the wider Zetland Park masterplan, to raise funds towards an accessible and inclusive play park. In particular, the donation has allowed them to surpass their target to purchase a wheelchair accessible roundabout for the park.
